Papillon Breeders Produce Top Quality Dogs
The Papillon is a popular toy dog whose name means “butterfly”. It comes by this name because of the shape of its head and ears. The breed began appearing in 16th century European paintings because of its popularity with European nobility. It is believed to have evolved from the Titian Spaniel in Spain and France. Papillion breeders believe the breed to have been a favorite of King Louis XIV of France. In the 1900’s the breed was well established as a favorite at dog shows as well. Today, the Pap is considered one of the most popular of the toy breeds as a family pet as well as a show dog.
The Papillon, though small, is a sturdy, active little dog. He is not to be mistaken for a fragile lap dog, though he can settle well into that role. Papillon breeders rate the personality of the Papillon as a tough and loyal little dog who is also the outdoorsy type. They will weather most climates and might even route out a rat or two. However, you will discover that the Pap is more tolerant of a hot climate than he is of a cold climate.
Papillon breeders also say that Papillons are very friendly with strangers and other animals. They are very well mannered around children. Though they are not considered a high energy dog, they are medium energy dogs, which means a daily romp in the yard or a short brisk walk would be beneficial. People mistakingly think the Papillon is a high maintainance breed. All they require in the way of grooming is frequent brushing and a bath. Paps are considered to be “wash and wear” dogs.
The Papillon breed are distinctly white with either black or brown, and sometimes both, markings. They are predominately white. The hair on the butterfly ears can be long and feathered in an upright position, or may hang at the side of the head. They do not have an undercoat, but their hair is longish and silky with feathering at the under body and legs. The Paps have tails that curl over the back. The standard height and weight of these dogs, according to Papillon breeders, is 10 to 11 inches at the shoulder and 3 to 8 pounds.
